Two Arrested After Several Thefts at Union County Coal Mine

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says it’s made two arrests in an ongoing theft investigation at River View Coal in Union County, Kentucky.

The sheriff’s office said the arrests came after several items like wallets and a gun had been stolen from vehicles at River View Coal.

UCSO says that a former River View Coal employee, 45-year-old William F. Carpenter, was identified as a suspect in the first round of thefts that occurred at the mine.

According to the sheriff’s office, a warrant was issued for Carpenter’s arrest. They say that after the first thefts occurred at the coal mine, Carpenter remained wanted until returning back to the coal mine a second time to steal more.

The sheriff’s office said that when Carpenter came back the second time, he was in a vehicle owned by 35-year-old Crystal L. Moore.

UCSO says the stolen items were found in Moore’s home during a search warrant that was served just hours after the latest thefts occurred. They say Carpenter was also found in the home hiding under a bed.

The sheriff’s office says that Carpenter was charged with Criminal Trespassing and that Moore was charged with Hindering Apprehension and Prosecution.

More charges against the two could be forthcoming as the investigation remains ongoing, according to the sheriff’s office.
