Telangana: 4 workers die in underground coal mine mishap | Hyderabad News –


HYDERABAD: Four workers of Singareni Collieries died when the roof of an underground mine caved in while they were working at Srirampur in Mancherial district on Wednesday.
The mishap occurred at SRP3 & 3A incline underground mine in Srirampur. According to an official statement from Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) the accident occurred while the workers were doing roof stitching work in the underground mine. Suddenly part of the roof fell at 10.30 am. The collapsed roof was 6 metre long, three metre wide, two metre high and the four workers were trapped below it and lost their lives, said an SCCL official.
The deceased workers were identified as B Laxmaiah, 60, a Timber Man, from Namnoor village in Hajipur mandal, V Krishna Reddy, 57, Timber Man, G Satyanarayana Raju, 32, Badli Worker, and R Chandrasekhar, 32, a Badli worker, from Sirampur town.
At the time of the mishap there were about 21 workers including miners and the supporting staff were discharging duties in the mine and there were apprehensions that more people could be trapped inside the mine. However by evening it was clarified that other workers were safe.
“All the four workers died on the spot in the accident. No other workers remained trapped in the mine. We were informed that the rest of the workers came out of the mine after the incident. One body has been retrieved and efforts are on to retrieve the other three bodies,” Jaipur ACP G Narender said.
Upon learning about the mishap, senior officials of SCCL and police rushed to the spot. Family members of the workers as well as worker’s union representatives staged a protest demanding the SCCL authorities to step up safety measures to ensure that such mishaps will not recur.
SCCL Chairman and MD, N Sridhar expressed shock and grief over the tragic incident. While expressing condolences to the victim’s families, the Chairman and MD, ordered for an inquiry into the mishap. SCCL authorities also stated that a member of the deceased employee’s family will get a job at the place of their choice and they will also receive a compensation ranging from Rs 70 lakh to Rs 1 crore.
